William M. Evarts: Lawyer, Diplomat, Statesman

Evarts, who is considered one of the greatest attorneys the country has known, was a New Englander who spent most of his active life in New York and Washington. He was a charter member of the Republican party, a supporter of Lincoln, secretary of state, United States senator, and the defender of many historical decisions. To read his life is to read history in the making.
