The Southside quarter, which began as shoreline mangroves, quickly developed into Miami’s upscale residential neighborhood. The successful people of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, including Louis Comfort Tiffany, Arthur Brisbane, William Jennings Bryan, and countless other magnates of the Gilded Age, purchased lots from Mary Brickell and established their winter residences in what was known as the Magic City’s Gold Coast. As Miami grew, the area changed with the times, evolving from upscale, single-family residences to the Manhattan of the South.
