Out on America’s Great Plains, a young Lakota boy finds an orphaned foal on the prairie. He names the mustang Paint for her black-and-white markings. Boy and horse become inseparable and together they learn to hunt buffalo, their fear of the massive beasts tempered by a growing trust in each other. When soldiers attack the family’s camp, Paint flees, but loneliness drives her to join the captive horses owned by Abe’s Buffalo Hunting Company. But the buffalo herds are soon decimated, and Paint is sold on to a rancher who raises cattle on what was once native land. Paint’s agility and speed make her a good cow-pony, but an icy winter followed by a summer drought kill off most of the cattle. Starving, Paint sees her fate become intertwined with that of newly arrived English homesteaders on the Canadian prairie. Unsuited to a life of pulling a plow, Paint does her best …until the dust storm hits.
