Onet and his wife Virginia, both veterinarians working in Romanian academia, managed to escape from an oppressive regime back in 1985, asked for political asylum in the United States and they lived in this country ever since. In a succession of extraordinary events, the author describes how he and his wife, after having been repeatedly denied tourist visas to visit Greece, decided to defect to West Europe, leaving behind their beloved family members, their belongings, their reputable social positions. In pursue of freedom and happiness they were confronted with a lot of diffi culties, unpredictable events and went through many emotionally critical moments.
