Questo saggio include considerazioni di una ricerca presentata al Convegno Internazionale "Dominique Vivant Denon", tenutosi in Francia a Chalon-sur-Saone, Universite de Bourgogne, tra il 1997 e il 1999. Le mie ricerche di allora presero le mosse dalla dimensione poetica delle rovine di Pompei e del fascino del Vesuvio, dal punto di vista del viaggiatore del Grand Tour, fenomeno che tanta parte ha svolto nel diffondere l'immagine di Napoli nei suoi complessi aspetti socio-antropologici, architettonici, culturali, nonche squisitamente artistici.
