John Walker Motson OBE, born in Salford, Lancashire, England, UK on 10th July 1945, was an association football commentator. Starting on BBC TV during 1971, he covered over 2000 games on television & radio. John was the leading football commentator at the BBC from the late '70s - 2008, except for a brief spell in the mid-'90s. Motson often wore a sheepskin coat during winter months after he 'battled horizontal sleet showers ahead of Wycombe Wanderers' FA Cup tie with Peterborough United' during Dec. 1990. John retired from live TV commentary in 2008 but continued to cover games for Match of the Day highlights and featured on BBC Radio 5 Live, as well as commentating on CBeebies' Footy Pups. He announced his full retirement from BBC commentary during September 2017, having commentated on 10 FIFA World Cups, 10 UEFA European Championships & 29 FA Cup finals. Motson revealed the following July that he was going to work for Talksport.
