Hazards to Drinking Water Supplies presents an analysis of the chronology of pollution incidents in Europe and addresses the protection of abstracted water courses from irregular pollution incidents arising from industrial sources, such as the storage of potentially hazardous material. A system of identification and regulation of risks associated with hazardous industrial sites is proposed which is easy and umambiguous to use, classifying sites by a Potential Abstraction Risk Index (the PARI). This system can be used to evaluate consequences of pollution incidents to abstracted water courses, and is based upon the establishment of a safe level of toxic substances stored in a site. Additionally, the authors present a methodology for identifying probable pollutants and polluters on receipt of complaints from the public regarding the quality of the drinking water, and refer to a group of computer programs developed for these assessments. One chapter presents unique detailed accounts of different major pollution incidents and, where possible, causes are identified and effects assessed.
