The small community in SC3 is facing a new challenge: next summer pupils from the Continent will come and stay for a couple of weeks with local families to learn or improve their English. Some of them will prove disappointing, not least one of their teachers. The narrator's family will get out of their way to help, but can they really assist the local police with all the trouble created by some unknown thief? Why should such things take place in such a peaceful group, and what can be done about them?
