Famous as the home of the British Army, the small village of Aldershot in the north-east corner of Hampshire grew rapidly around the garrison that was established on the heath there for the British Army during the Crimean War in 1854. This was the first permanent training camp for the Army and within ten years Aldershot had become a significant town. By the end of the nineteenth century the Victorian new town had become fully established, with theatres, churches and chapels, pubs, schools, shops and residential areas. The town has continued to expand alongside the military camp in the last 100 years, but alongside newly regenerated shopping areas has retained many of its Victorian landmarks.
In A-Z of Aldershot author Paul H. Vickers reveals the stories behind Aldershot’s history, its streets and buildings and the people connected with the town. This enthralling A-Z tour of Aldershot’s history is fully illustrated with photography and will appeal to all those with an interest in this fascinating town.
