Phillimore’s Edinburgh
Jan Bondeson
In his day, Reginald P. Phillimore (1855-1941) was one of Britain’s leading postcard artists. A great friend of the Athens of the North, he settled in North Berwick and delighted in depicting various Edinburgh locations, both famous and obscure. Artistically, these cards are some of the finest he produced. He sold his cards through a network of dealers, all over Britain, and since he employed a local schoolgirl to hand colour his drawings, no two coloured cards are the same. Although some of Phillimore’s Edinburgh postcards are easy to come by, others are exceedingly rare and sought after today. This book brings together, for the first time ever, all of Phillimore’s Edinburgh postcards, to present a fascinating and unique picture of the highways and byways of the great city, from a series of vintage views by a master artist.
Phillimore’s Edinburgh makes use of all of his ninety-five Edinburgh postcards, with explanatory text and a few supplementary illustrations. It will appeal both to those who know and love Edinburgh and to postcard collectors.
