Trumpington, now part of Cambridge, is south-west of the city centre. It was a thriving community long before Cambridge became important. Archaeological investigations revealed Bronze Age, Iron Age, Roman and Anglo-Saxon settlements. Manors of Trumpington are listed in the Domesday Book and the quality of the vineyards was noted in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. Apart from a short spell when coprolites were mined, agriculture has always been the principal industry. A major development was the transfer in the 1950s of the Plant Breeding Institute from the University of Cambridge to an independent research institute at Anstey Hall Farm. Trumpington Through Time takes readers on a journey around notable landmarks in Trumpington, including the war memorial designed by Eric Gill and the grave of Henry Fawcett.
