The East Lancashire Railway

Despite being a relative newcomer to the preserved railways of Great Britain, the East Lancashire Railway has rapidly grown into a major tourist attraction. Main-line access and generous curves mean that the railway regularly runs visiting stock, including the largest main-line locomotives. The line runs through a diverse landscape, including towns, industrial areas and large rural sections. Along the route are several river crossings, cuttings, tunnels and inclines. Stations at regular intervals provide access to numerous walks, tourist attractions and leisure opportunities. Throughout the year, the railway also runs special event days, many of which are depicted in this book, including Santa Special Trains, 1940s wartime weekends, Teddy Bears’ Picnics, classic car events, steam events, diesel events and, returning in 2011, days out with Thomas the Tank Engine. Illustrated with a varied selection of stunning photographs, The East Lancashire Railway depicts the line in all of its many moods. Representing one man’s photographic journey, the book portrays the railway from a variety of angles, in a wide range of weather conditions and at all times of the day and night.
