With the financial support of the Division for Maritime Transport of the Dutch Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management, Policy Research Corporation N.V. has carried out a Caribbean SWOT analysis. Two sectors were examined: container shipping and cruising. Included in the study was a comprehensive scan of the competitive position of Caribbean ports with respect to the main container trade routes or cruise loops within the region. The main analyses, findings and conclusions of this study are brought together in Strategies for Global and Regional Ports. The conclusions presented in the book are largely based on information gathered during fact-finding missions in the wider Caribbean region. During these missions several interviews with key players were conducted, including port authorities, terminal-operating companies, shipping and forwarding agents. In addition, the wide experience gained by the project team and other Policy Research staff members in the course of prior research projects also provided useful material.
