Der Rosenkavalier, also known as The Rose-Bearer, is a comedic opera in three acts written by Austrian author Hugo Von Hofmannsthal and composed by Richard Strauss. Set in 18th century Vienna, the story follows the love triangle between the aging and wealthy Marschallin, her young lover Octavian, and the beautiful Sophie von Faninal, whom Octavian falls in love with. As the story unfolds, the Marschallin realizes that her relationship with Octavian has run its course and decides to let him go. Meanwhile, Sophie's father, Baron von Faninal, has arranged for her to marry the boorish Baron Ochs, but Octavian intervenes and impersonates a servant to expose Ochs' true character and prevent the marriage. The opera is known for its complex characters, intricate plot, and lush musical score, which includes the famous waltz sequence.
