This is one of the most ancient and celebrated novels of China. Scholars agree that it was written under the Yuan Dynasty, 1277-1348. The author is known only as Ming-tsiao Chong-jen, signifying literally The Medium of the Celebrated Doctrine. This edition has been translated from the Chinese by George Soulie de Morant and done into English by H. Bedford-Jones.
