Smart continues the story of his life, beginning when he was discharged from active duty with the Army following WW II. He recounts the trials and tribulations of being part owner of a hardware store, commanding an infantry battalion (reserve), and attending various Army Schools. After meeting and marrying his wife, he was called to active duty as an instructor at the Command and General Staff College. Then he was assigned to Fort Lewis, Washington, where he served as the Post 0-2, a battalion commander and as a regimental executive officer.
