The Road Home chronicles the journey of a family caught in the Great Depression, as they make their way west to a new life in Oregon. The Ben Shepherd family comes to life through their own words in essays and personal letters interspersed throughout the narrative. Ben Shepherd’s adventuresome nature takes his wife Jennie, and their first baby on a foray into Oregon during the late 1800’s only to be discouraged by the hostilities of the range wars. In 1928, Ben and Jennie return to Oregon in search of prosperity. We come to know nine brothers and sisters reaching maturity, pursuing their destinies, always tied to the heart of their family, the Shepherd home.
