Dr. Robert Jacoby did not realize how dangerous missionary activity could be when he signed up to work in a medical clinic in Uzbekistan for six months. However, having seen the massacre of fifteen hundred Westerners by rebel soldiers this afternoon and now looking across the stream at the encampment of the twenty thousand soldiers, he had to come to grips with the hazards that he and the other refugees faced. Despite having a number of Marines and Russian soldiers in their group there was little chance that the three hundred Westerners could fight successfully the army arrayed against them, and no outside help was available. They were on their own without an escape route or a plan.
