The interviews were incredible, and even more so with the rides-along with state troopers, deputies, and local police. As I sat in the passenger seat on some rides, and others at night in the back seat with arrested drivers and their cohorts, the world is totally different than TV or the movies. It is also very different than the assumptions reasonably educated people have about what law enforcement is about. The interviews will be one of the most colorful memories of writing this book and the most challenging material to convey in my teaching career. The middle of the book is given to several discussions about rage, bad weather driving, and other things as you can see in the table of contents. At times I will be getting into your face a little, and at other times you will read about the road as I see it. Many of you will have different viewpoints based on your experiences and personality. This is good. Make sure, however, you have reasonable counter thoughts and not just silly venting. The last part is a complete walkthrough of a multiple car crash. As you will read later it is a composite of real events, partly to disguise any real person or vehicle that can be identified, and also for educational purposes. Do know that it is a nothing held back experience; it is not intended to be shocking like some stupid movie. The walkthrough is as informative as it is real. It was tough to write and it is tough to read. Aside from the interviews, bits and pieces, and the walkthrough there is no singular direction through the book. Read in random access mode or in sequence. Either way, may “the road” now become what you choose to do with it.
