There is really not much that we know about Nick. His relics, (bones) have been lost, stolen, hidden, and stolen again. Some of his bones are said to still be in Turkey. So. who can say what life must’ve been like for him? All we really do know about him is that he was an only child born into an incredibly rich, aristocratic family. Speculation but nothing concrete about his lineage or the names of his parents. I would guess that he was most likely betrothed from birth. This sort of thing was normal for families of high esteem and political influence. He was orphaned in his teens and lived with his uncle and Abbot of a secret Christian monastery, became a priest then was quickly ordained as Bishop of Myra when he walked into a run down monastery in Palmyra Lycia (ancient Turkey), literally when he walked in.He tossed 3 bags of gold into the home of a family that was in dire straits about to sell 3 daughters into prostitution-slavery to pay their debts and lost dowries, thus bailing them out. Details of this event are diverse. He was never married as far as anyone knows and no one can say why for certain what his personal reasons were. The mandatory celibacy restrictions imposed on priests didn’t come about for almost a thousand years. All kinds of fantastic legends circulated about him as a dedicated wonder (miracle) worker, honest, a healer, a benevolent giver and a kind hearted man who went the extra mile and desired to emulate the life of Jesus Christ.
