He was orphaned in his teens and lived with his uncle and Abbot of a secret Christian monastery, became a priest then was quickly ordained as Bishop of Myra when he walked into a run down monastery in Palmyra Lycia (ancient Turkey), literally when he walked in.He tossed 3 bags of gold into the home of a family that was in dire straits about to sell 3 daughters into prostitution-slavery to pay their debts and lost dowries, thus bailing them out. Details of this event are diverse. He was never married as far as anyone knows and no one can say why for certain what his personal reasons were.
