Set in the bucolic Pennsylvania countryside, this is a wonderful story of friendship, faith and growing pains of a young country as Ameerica struggles towards independence from England. As the Brisith army comes closer to Philadelphia during the American Revolution, Thomas, a Quaker grapples with the conflict between the faith with which he grew up and the duty that now seems of the untmost neccessity. When his two best friends (and cousins) join up in the Edgmont militia with him they all promise to take care of one another, no matter what happens. But war is nothing at all as any of them imagined and when terrible tragedy strikes, Thomas finds himself having to reconfront his deepest beliefs and worst fears.
