This book is translated from Russian. Tolstoy is considered one of the greatest of all novelists. His collected works number 90 and critics regard War and Peace and Anna Karenina as his two masterpieces. Following the publication of Anna Karenina , Tolstoy’s life had undergone a complete change. He entirely devoted himself to Christ’s teaching. He studied it searchingly and indefatigably, the literary result being four works, which are contained in this volume including: an account of that development of his life and thoughts which ended in the conviction that the truth of life is contained in the teaching of Christ; an investigation into the interpretation of this teaching according to the Orthodox Greek Church and according to the Church in general; an independent study of the Gospel, and a summary of the author’s way of understanding it; and an exposition of the true meaning of Christ’s message, the reasons of its distortion, and what will be the results of its real promulgation.
