The Handbook of Social Policy

This is a proposal to publish the second edition of the Handbook of Social Policy. This handbook was originally conceptualized as a ‘state of the field’ of social policy that examines past, current and future directions. Since its publication, it has been adopted in masters and doctoral programs as a text and thus should be revised to stay current. Since the first edition, much has changed in US social policy, such as a new presidency and political party and the terrorist attacks of September 11th. Within the field of social work, there has been increased attention to issues of diversity and social justice. The second edition of this hanbook will follow a similar format as the first but a few key changes will be incorporated based on the editors’ ideas and reviewer feedback. 1. The editors and chapter authors will update the book throughout to reflect changes in various policies and to include updated references. 2. Part IV will be moved in front of Part III to be consistent with the way most instructors teach the course.3. The chapter authors will be encouraged to add more case studies and examples. 4.The new edition will be released in dual edition and will have an instructor’s manual and website with references and resources. 5. Content will be added to reflect the following areas that have received increased attention: Advocacy Policy practice Immigration issues Discrimination Pay more attention to diverse populations More attention focued on international issues
