The Treaty of Canandaigua, 1794: A Primary Source Examination of the Treaty Between the United States and the Tribes of Indians Called the Six Nations

After years of tension between white settlers and Native Americans, the signing of this treaty marked a clear change. It allowed the government to reach a formal peace with the Six Nations of the Iroquois Confederacy, which surrendered their claims to Ohio, and who–for the first time–were recognized as independent.
