Theoretical models of nucleosynthesis in the Big Bang, in the first stellar generations, and in stars and supernovae over the histories of our Galaxy and other galaxies provide a measure of element production over the lifetime of the Universe. Observational studies of abundances in stars, galaxies, gas concentrations in galaxies and clusters of galaxies, the intergalactic medium, and gas clouds at high redshift are reviewed.
