"What a wonderful story, such a true picture of life in Coventry in the 1970s." 5 star review.
An unlikely friendship in unlikely times
Waking up on the first day of the summer holidays in 1973, schoolboy Philip Knott had rather mixed emotions about what lay ahead. His mother's illness, his father's inability to cope with the illness, his sister's desperation to move of the family home, and his desire to protect his young brother all played on his mind that sunny July morning.
Both a natural swimmer and a natural shoplifter, could either of these avenues offer Philip a better, brighter future and an escape from the struggles of adolescent life on a neglected council estate? A pipe dream maybe, but could it really be possible for his favourite footballer to help and guide him through these difficult times.
Thankfully, the start of 1973-74 football season was just around the corner and today was the day that the fixtures were released.
"Such a great snapshot of time." 5 stars.
"It makes you laugh out loud and also cry." 5 stars.
"Gritty from start to finish." 5 stars.
