The Lancashire seaside town of Blackpool has been popular with visitors for over 200 years. The arrival of the railways in 1846 brought ever more people into what was soon developed as a large town and its famous illuminations and Golden Mile, the three piers, its Pleasure Beach and iconic tower and its ballroom, its Grand Theatre and Winter Gardens still attract many today. Recently, the Comedy Carpet, one of the largest pieces of public art ever commissioned in the UK, was laid out in the space outside the tower, illustrating how Blackpool is constantly reinventing itself.
