The small town of Serene, once part of the untamed Canadian wilderness, now provides re-found hope, inspiration, and tranquility to the thousands of annual visitors, but that wasn’t always the case.

Jim, Karen, Ron, and Cindy were the best of friends. They all had a true passion for the great outdoors and up until Jim started medical school, spent two weeks of every year fulfilling that yearning. Separated by their professional lives, and after Jim’s eight long years of medical school and postgraduate training, the four of them decided to once again fulfill their dream with an unforgettable trip.

This trip however, was to be one that they never expected. While TRANSCON Flight 286 was en-route from Edmonton to Anchorage in one of Canada’s worst winters, an in-flight emergency forces the crew to crash land. Being almost eighty miles off course, and hidden deep in the untamed Canadian wilderness, it was quickly realized that a rescue was doubtful. With no other choice, the surviving passengers, having an incredible desire to live, pool together their knowledge of the outdoors and defy the laws of nature by not only surviving but by establishing and building their own community - one which is still in existence today.
