The Golden Age of Rubaiyat Art, 1884-1913. Volume I. The Illustrators. Edward FitzGerald’s Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam is arguably one of the most widely published and illustrated books of poetry of all time. For over 150 years the various versions have been published and new illustrated versions continue to appear to this day. A series of three extensively illustrated books document the original artists who illustrated books published for the public. In the first volume, thirty-four different artists are detailed. Their contributions range from two to 75 pictures. For the first time, all of the artists are cataloged with over 168 pictures, many of them not seen since their publication over 100 years ago. This collection of artwork alone makes the volume impressive but with novel insights and information, the book sets the stage for a full appreciation of the historical role of art in understanding FitzGerald’s Rubaiyat. A newly discovered artist is also detailed. Tables, charts and timelines detail the artists’ contributions.
