Most Christian churches today make reference to "Father Abraham" as one of the more prominent Old Testament heroes of the faith. Probably fewer writings and messages focus on Abraham's nephew, Lot. However, a careful study of Lot's life provides timely insight into things to watch out for and things to avoid when seeking to be "yeast" in the world. We can learn from Lot's example what can impair our ability to establish influence for God in a society that is becoming more and more Godless. While Abraham is often cited as a positive example for us to emulate, Lot, on the other hand, represents a negative example. As a citizen of the wicked city of Sodom, Lot has a great opportunity to impact those around him for God, but he fails to measure up to a higher standard-even though the Bible says that Lot was a righteous man. Being righteous, in and of itself, is insufficient for him to fulfill God's purpose for his life. More is required to be the yeast of which Jesus spoke. We would be ill advised to pattern ourselves after Lot, but from him we can learn what to avoid.
