There is a neighborhood on hill that is divided into two streets in the shape of a horseshoe, Evergreen Ave. and Oakland Ave; two very different groups of children live there. In the story the streets become symbolic of the two sides of life, and the children learn lessons through their adventures and conflicts about the ways of the world.
