Al conocer del alzamiento del 10 de Octubre de 1868, Maximo Gomez se presento en los campamentos Cubanos en calidad de soldado, sin hacer mencion de sus conocimientos militares; en pocas semanas le otorgaron el grado de Sargento. A los pocos dias de su incorporacion, tras la historica carga al machete del 26 de Octubre en Pinos de Baire, Maximo Gomez fue identificado como uno de los mas capaces jefes del Ejercito Libertador Cubano; los propios Espanoles lo reconocieron como "... el guerrillero mas grande de America." Esta es una historia de la Guerra de los 10 Anos, segun narrada en su Diario de Combate por el General Maximo Gomez.
