But Captain Hill, of the Ghoorkas, after the fight, specially brought to the notice of the Brigadier the conduct of a gallant native, Subadar Mahabir Bhist, by rank and name. A powerful Afghan rushed from’ a small house as the Ghoorkas were following in pursuit. Mahabir Bhist, despite his age and thirty-four years’ service, –for his beard was white with the lapse of time, –raced after the man for over three hundred yards, brought him to bay, and engaged him in single combat in the presence of his regiment. The Afghan sprang upon the brave old soldier with rifle clubbed, and dealt him a blow which would have crushed his skull beneath it, but the sturdy Subadar turned it aside with the hilt of his sword, and cut the Afghan down. Throughout the whole of this day the worthy Ghoorka had been noticeable for the excellent way in which he handled and encouraged the men under his command. This active old Subadar was specially brought under the notice of Sir Frederick Roberts by General Macphersoa Other names, for acts of bravery during the action, were mentioned in despatches. All these well deserved the enconiums which were passed upon their conduct. The afternoon was spent in active pursuit, and towards the end of day Sir Frederick Roberts himself appeared upon the scene, to assure himself of the success of his orders. He directed a return to Sherpur, as the enemy were now seen to be well scattered in every direction over the face of the country, evidently making for their homes in the villages amidst the surrounding mountain sides, and amongst the valleys beyond.
