He knew a cane which had travelled with its owner over some of the highest mountains in North and South America; a holly which had discomfited an enraged mastiff dog; and a blackthorn that had so stoutly belaboured a furious bull as to put him fairly to flight. I owe much to my kind-hearted uncle; for, from my earliest youth, he was ever ready to add to my pleasures and to act the part of a real friend. But, if it becomes us not to forget our earthly friends and benefactors, how much more should we remember His unnumbered mercies to whom we owe all things! How little do we know the amount of our obligations to our Heavenly Father! How little do we know what we owe to the Lord of Life and Glory! When this passing world is done, When has sunk yon glaring sun, When we stand with Christ in glory, Looking on life’s finished story, Then, Lord, shall I fully know–Not till then–how much I owe. When I hear the wicked call On the rocks and hills to fall; When I see them start and shrink On the fiery deluge brink; Then, Lord, shall I fully know–Not till then–how much I owe. (75) CHAPTER IX.
