Marie was born in a small town with five brothers, two younger than her and three older. They attended school together while growing up, but then the three oldest brothers moved to another state after graduation. Marie played all the games that her brothers played, including tree climbing and rock throwing on the railroad tracks, she wrestled with them from time to time and most of the time she even dressed like they did. Other students often provoked her, calling her a tomboy, and unable to resist being provoked, she got into a lot of fights. Marie wanted to have girlfriends but other girls her age would see her playing with her brothers and would consider her too rough to take on as a girlfriend. She was spoiled as the only girl in the family, and most of the time the family would let her have her way about things around the house. While watching television, she wanted to be the prettiest lady in the movies, but she knew that in order to be the woman she desired to be.
