This volume presents a comprehensive analysis of secessionist regions in the late-20th century. While the literature on secession has focused on issues of politics and ethnicity, this book identifies the economic forces associated with secession in some 30 contemporary secessionist movements. Economic issues are found to be relevant before, during and after secession insofar as they determine how regions re-evaluate the costs and benefits associated with their respective unions, how economic entities disentangle their ties and what economic factors determine the future viability of regions. Moreover, it is suggested that economic factors associated with the redrawing of boundaries will only increase in importance in the future. Other works by Milica Zarkovic Bookman include The Political Economy of Discontinuous Development and Issues in Indian Agricultural Development .
