The author argues that one of the central contributions which Hannah Arendt makes to Western philosophy is the thematization of the experience of birth and the principle of beginning which accompanies it. She suggests that in Arendt’s account of natality there is a shift from the ordinary understanding of birth as a merely factual experience to birth as a philosophical category. Arendt coined the term natality to articulate three profound dimensions of birth and beginnings in human existence: primary natality designates the fact of both birth and being, political natality designates the capacity for beginning in speech and action and tertiary natality, the life of the mind identified in its inherent nascence.
