From some hints at his anterior history in the book before us, we gather that for upwards of fifty years he has been a professor of the grossest materialism, only distinguished from sheer atheism by the childish belief in a heathenish deity of enormous, though not unlimited power. He has believed neither in prayer, nor in Providence, nor in a future life; neither in angel nor spirit. He has been without hope
and without God in the world. Dr. Hare is also a chemist of good repute in the scientific world, who has distinguished himself by important contributions to science, –contributions, which, we believe, have been generally the result of a high degree of mechanical skill and ingenuity, rather than of eminent powers of scientific investigation.
