The variety rosea, as its name implies, has rose-coloured flowers, and the variety alba has ivory-white flowers. COMMON LARCH (Larix europaea) The Larch is one of the few deciduous cone-bearing trees. In Europe it is found growing wild, mostly on mountains and rocky hillsides. Over there it is one of the important timber trecjs, and the long, straight trunks are in great demand for various structural purposes. It forms a symmetrical tree, growing, in favourable situations, to a height of one hundred feet. The young branches are of a light yellowish brown colour and have a tendency to droop, which gives the tree a graceful appearance. It is beautiful in winter, but it is in the spring–when its leaves, of the tenderest green, are pushing forth–that it is seen to best advantage. The Larches succeed best in deep, well-drained soil and are valuable either for group planting or as isolated specimens. The variety glauea has leaves of a glaucous blue colour which is especially striking in early spring, and the variety pendula has weeping branches, which give it a peculiarly effective appearance, especially in winter. LEUCOTHOE or ANDROMEDA Leucothoe Catesbaei) The graceful sprays of Leucothoe’ foliage arc used to a large extent by florists in making up tlieir floral pieces. It lias shining leaves which, in winter, turn a beautiful bronzy purple: they are produced on recurving stems about two feet in height. In early spring the fragrant white flowers are produced in drooping racemes. Leucothoe is a relative of, and delights in the same conditions as does the Khododendron.
