The first volume of a two-volume series, this book tells the story of Armand, a young French man snatched from the rural world of his native Provence in March 1943 and deported to the world of compulsary labour in Upper Silesia, Poland. This is not a work of fiction, but a biographical account. The author has endeavoured to present some of the darkest years in his father's life, thereby demonstrating that the reality of France, at the time, was often very different from the popular and political opinion that still prevails today.
