Italian fencing master Giacomo di Grassi first published his treatise on swordsmanship in Venice in 1570. His work codified a late Renaissance-era system of swordsmanship that was both elegantly simple and highly practical. Covering several common weapon forms of the period, including the rapier and its companion arms as well as the two-handed sword and various polearms, di Grassi's method equipped the 16th century swordsman with all the knowledge necessary to survive in a violent world of street brawls, honour duels and military skirmishes. Present-day historical fencing researcher and instructor Greig Watson here presents a comprehensive guide to di Grassi's fencing style. Encompassing a complete explanation of theoretical concepts, body mechanics and sword techniques, this volume aims to make di Grassi's system accessible to modern practitioners of fencing and martial arts. Practical training exercises allow the reader to bring the swordsmanship of the Renaissance alive in a modern training context. Alongside the theory, extensive supporting material is included such as historical background, suggested lesson plans & training curriculum, an in-depth discussion of free-fencing practice, and much more. This book contains all the information necessary to begin training in di Grassi's fencing system. Prior knowledge or possession of the original treatise is not required.
