The first US Wooden Nickel 'Flat' was issued in Tenino as a result of the Great Depression in 1931. The issue of such an instrument to cope with the shortage of money at the time proved such a success that other communities quickly followed suit. It was not long before communities were issuing Wooden Nickel 'Flats' to commemorate land-marks in their history.
