Norman Bissett worked for the British Council for 30 years in Lebanon, Turkey, Uruguay, Spain, Scotland, Egypt and the Philippines. Since he retired in 1995 he has written prolifically and has been widely published in the small press. To date he has produced 14 collections of verse. He now lives in Edinburgh. As with most of his previous collections, the poems in Heels Are For Kicking Up are not governed by any single dominant theme but offer a wide variety of topics, serious and not-so-serious, in a variety of styles that reflect his wry but compassionate take on life in general. The book was written primarily as a series of snapshots or set of postcards to keep family living abroad in the picture, but is also designed to entertain the general reader. It is characterised by Norman's love of language, powers of observation, gentle humour, concern for form, easy accessibility and avoidance of impenetrability.
