La vicenda si svolge ad Ascoli Piceno nell'ambito della piccola borghesia segnata da difficolta materiali e da carenze affettive. Due sorelle, tristi della loro solitudine, cresciute tra un padre vecchio e malato, una madre soverchiata dai dolori e dalle disgrazie e un fratello ritardato, consumano la loro sconfitta. Nessuna delle due incontrera quella felicita che si identifica con l'amore, negato da un destino beffardo.
