This book is the story of one young man's journey through two years national service during the years 1957-1959. Sapper to Subaltern traces his time through basic training, on through advanced infantry training at Mons Officer Cadet School, and then to the Officer Cadet Wing of the School of Military Engineering, before being commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Corps of Royal Engineers. Thereafter, his service in the Training Brigade of the Royal Engineers training new recruits in basic infantry procedures and military engineering skills. This is very much a personal account as each national serviceman has a different story to tell.
