Maurice Ferares overleefde de Shoa in Amsterdam als enige van zijn familie. In Violist in het verzet (1991) beschreef Ferares zijn ervaringen in het verzet en als onderduiker. Sindsdien heeft hij vijf romans geschreven, die door de kritiek eens bestempeld werden als "huiveringwekkend, maar ook poetisch" en "vol ingehouden verdriet". Met deze bundel van 23 nooit eerder gepubliceerde gedichten slaagt hij uiteindelijk erin om emotie, verdriet en rouw meesterlijk vorm te geven.
