Aurora Ljungstedt satte flera milstolpar inom den svenska litteraturhistorien, varav denna hennes debutroman fran 1853 ar en. Hin ondes hus ar namligen den forsta gotiska skrackromanen pa svenska. Har varvas spokhus, gamla dokument och vansinne med mord, hemligheter och perverterad karlek om vartannat precis som det ska i en klassisk skrackroman. Att spraket i boken inte har moderniserats minskar knappast den redan hoga charmfaktorn.
