Pau is first and foremost a writer. Nonetheless, he departs from his element with Mime, an AA consort and former ballerina, as he seeks to choreograph a ballet for her. He winds up with a tougher character, Maynot, though, who cheats him of all royalties and savings from his lifeline of work, writing. In the end he is at a lost for words
