This book explores how we became who we are. It tracks consciousness and culture from the earliest times in prehistory up through the present. We will begin our exploration at the end of the last Ice Age during the Pleistocene. Our data for this examination will consist of ancient written documents and prehistoric art. It is important to consider these records because they are some of the only existing data that preserve and represent ancient thought. They give us insight into the types of beliefs that our ancestors held and why we might believe the things that we believe.
