The study is organized in four parts. Part I addresses the question, \“to what types of duties are U.S. Army generals assigned?\” It then considers the ways in which the U.S. Army War College curriculum addresses the requirements for formal education for \“professional generalship\” as delineated by the types of assignments which U.S. Army generals fill. Part II addresses the question, \“what specific types of activity are common to the duties of general officers, regardless of assignment?\” It then considers the ways in which the U.S. Army War College curriculum addresses the requirements for \“professional generalship\” delineated by these types of activity. Part III provides general conclusions relevant to both of the preceding assessments of \“professional generalship.\” Finally, part IV offers recommendations.
